Traditional capacity-building doesn’t always work for communities of color. The current paradigm of capacity-building can be summarized as “Give a person a fish, and they can eat for a day; teach a person to fish, and they can eat for the rest of their life.” This philosophy doesn’t work for under-resourced nonprofits, who spend their time learning complex skills, such as financial management and government reporting. Learning these skills takes these leaders away from the work they are experts in: serving our communities.
Our new philosophy is “If a person is an amazing carpenter, give them the fish so that they have the energy to build more houses.” Our Community Alliance frees up our partners’ time so they can focus on those critical activities that often only they can do: serving communities of color.
Our Community Alliance, launched in 2017, builds the capacity and amplifies the voice of communities of color. By becoming a partner of the Alliance, our partners gain access to the following services:
Advocacy and Collaboration: We create opportunities for communities-of-color-led nonprofits and communities to share resources, discuss lessons learned, build strategic collaborations, and work together to address systemic inequity. Learn more.
Coaching: The quality of organizational leadership is a core indicator of the organization’s ability to be effective in achieving its mission. We provide specialized capacity-building coaching to executive directors and leaders at all levels within the organization. Learn more.
Fellowship: We train diverse emerging leaders and place them at grassroots organizations led by communities of color. This deepens the bench of leadership of color while increasing the capacity of local community based organizations. Learn more.
Operations Support: We centralize operations support, strategically providing operations staffing to our partners so that they get the small amounts of highly-skilled labor an organization their size needs- and that they receive it in timely, financially viable, and culturally responsive manner.
